On October 15, 1985, he first killed document collector Steven Christensen, the son of a locally prominent clothier, Mac Christensen.[43] Later the same day, a second bomb killed Kathy Sheets, the wife of Christensen’s former employer. As Hofmann had intended, police initially suspected that the bombings were related to the impending collapse of an investment business of which Sheets’s husband, J. Gary Sheets, was the principal and Christensen his protégé.[44] The following day, Hofmann himself was severely injured when a bomb exploded in his car.
