ZEITGEIST /ˈzītˌɡīst/ (noun): the defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.

In the early 19th Century, in the burgeoning United States, we produced and published a new scripture for the Americans who believed that their new nation should be established on Christianity.

A Christ-centered zeitgeist at this time was responsible for the emergence of a plethora of new religions, most based on the Bible’s New Testament stories responsible for Christian beliefs.

In our new American scripture, published as the Book of Mormon, we expressed this growing zeitgeist as “the Spirit of Christ is given to every man⁠, that he may know good from evil.”

It is a unique human attribute to seek out that which is good, which then promotes hope and faith within a spirit of kindness, compassion, tolerance, and unity.

We represented “good” in our new American scripture as a “Tree of Life” for which humanity continually searches in hope of finding it in order to “partake of the fruit thereof … that it was most sweet, above all … the fruit thereof was white, to exceed all the whiteness.”

A tree can only be as good as the fruit it bears. A tree’s fruit cannot grow without proper nutrients.
