Editor’s summary:

This CWC was in response to an email Christopher received asking, “what do I need to do to have the peace and eternal life promised in 1 Nephi 14:7?”

Human beings exist to have joy. Every person wants to be happy and we all find happiness in different ways. To have peace and joy in this life we should pursue happiness for ourselves, removing ourselves from every single person in our life that causes us stress and misery including grown children, spouses, parents, and siblings. If we are unwilling to do that, we don’t deserve peace. Peace will come from not causing anyone unhappiness while you are in their presence. We have no right to cause others misery but we have every right to walk away. Rather than putting ourselves in positions that might hurt others, we should politely excuse ourselves. This is also preferable to lying to people.

To experience life eternal, we must not sin. Anything we do in our lives that cause another person misery is a sin. Most of us who come to this earth do so as our last chance to prove that we are actually good people. This experience allows our True Selves to see what our mortal selves will do to find happiness, without any energy help from our True Selves. We want to determine if we get happiness from making another person feel miserable in any way, shape, or form. When we die, we’ll judge ourselves on our actions. We’ll revisit every time we used our free will to cause another person misery.

To experience peace and life eternal, start agreeing “with your adversary whilst thou art in the way with him lest he esteem you as an enemy.” Christopher also referred us to the words of Jesus, written in the Bible, Matthew 5, 6, and 7 and plagiarized word-for-word in the Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi 12, 13, and 14. Additionally, we could read in The Sealed Portion when Adam is teaching his children the fullness of the Gospel. If we incorporate these teachings into our daily lives, we’ll walk a peaceable walk, getting along with all people, seeing them as the gods that they are, whether we agree with them or not.
